Poll: What book is “on deck” for you to read next?

14 Jan

One of the first habits I notice in developing Nerdy Book Club members in my classroom is the idea of having an “on deck” book – knowing what you plan on reading next. This isn’t the gajillion title To Be Read list that so many of us have – this is the deliberate choice of what comes next and is often at the ready for whenever we finish what we’re reading now!

So today’s poll question is:

What book do you plan to read NEXT?

Leave your answer in the comments below and check back to see what your fellow Nerdy friends have to say!

I plan to read Chickadee, by Louise Erdrich, next. The Birchbark House is one of my all time favorites and I’m looking forward to meeting Omakayas as an adult. I’ll also squeeze in Each Kindness, by Jacqueline Woodson, when it arrives in our library.

  2. Melissa Moreno January 14, 2013 at 5:22 am #

I’ll be reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green after I finish Les Miserables.

TFIOS is sooo good! You are in for a terrific treat!

    • Carol Hampton Rasco January 14, 2013 at 6:07 am #

I so wish i could read this “new” again…touched me, changed me.

    • Bridget Rieth January 14, 2013 at 10:32 pm #

You and I could be reading buddies…great choices! :)

      you’ll laugh. you’ll cry. :-)

    • Cathlin Shahriary January 19, 2013 at 9:08 pm #

Make sure you have the tissues handy! You’ll definitely need them. And be prepared- those characters will stay with you LONG after you’re done reading.

    On Deck for me are:
Navigating Early (thanks to Colby but I had a voracious reader/student ask for it so I passed it to her first)
Live By Night by Dennis Lehane (loved the way he fused history and fiction in The Given Day)
    Kevin

    • Holly Mueller January 15, 2013 at 6:48 am #

LOVED Navigating Early! It’ll be a Newbery contender for sure!

  4. M. David Waltour January 14, 2013 at 5:42 am #

Loving Richard Feynman by Penny Tangey.

  5. CBethM January 14, 2013 at 5:45 am #

My next up is The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen.

    • Amy Bright January 14, 2013 at 6:06 am #

A student of mine read it last year based upon recommendation from another student. She said it was the best book she read the whole year. Every time I try to check it out from the library, it’s gone. Must be fantastic read. :)

  6. gillis January 14, 2013 at 5:57 am #

The Light Between Oceans and Navigating Early are on this week’s list. Here’s hoping I get to them because I have 90 fiction stories to give feedback to before Friday. Maybe by writing this here it will propel me to succeed!

  7. The Styling Librarian January 14, 2013 at 6:03 am #

Shadow Bringer by David Calcutt – heard it connected in a way to A Monster Calls. Eager to open it!

  8. Susie Highley January 14, 2013 at 6:06 am #

I just picked up Bomb: The Race to Build-and Steal-the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon. With an extra week or so (compared to other years) to read potential Newbery/Caldecott/Printz potential winners, I’m trying to get several of those in.

    • thebrainlair January 14, 2013 at 7:33 am #

      Me too! Bomb was fantastic!

    • Teresa Wisner Garrett January 14, 2013 at 8:35 pm #

I am reading Bomb now it is a great read! Normally not a nonfiction fan but this is converting me.

  9. Amy Bright January 14, 2013 at 6:08 am #

Reading One For The Murphys next. Pretty excited because I hear nothing but good things about it!

    • Barb Keister January 14, 2013 at 7:10 am #

Love One for the Murphy’s – in fact, it is in my TBR pile again but it deserves a second read

    • Jenny Lussier (@jluss) January 14, 2013 at 8:52 am #

Loved One for the Murphys! It is wonderful.

  10. Carol Hampton Rasco January 14, 2013 at 6:16 am #

The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine

    • Maria Selke (@mselke01) January 14, 2013 at 6:37 am #

I absolutely loved Lions of Little Rock!

    • Carol Wilcox January 14, 2013 at 7:26 am #

Like Maria, I loved LIONS. I didn’t know anything about this part of the Little Rock story.

    • Teresa Wisner Garrett January 14, 2013 at 8:37 pm #

I loved Lions of Little Rock because as an Arkansas native you hear a lot about the year before but not much about the year after. Also knew the area where the story happened made it real.

    • Holly Mueller January 15, 2013 at 6:49 am #

I’m about ready to read that aloud to my class with LIttle Rock Girl 1957.

  11. readingteachsu January 14, 2013 at 6:17 am #

    Capture the flag

  12. Sherry - LibraryFanatic January 14, 2013 at 6:26 am #

I can’t seem to have just one book on deck. I have to look through my TBR pile and determine how I feel that day. Sometimes it depends on how I feel after tr last book finished and whether or not I have a book hangover.

    • Mary Alise herrera January 14, 2013 at 10:06 pm #

Sherry – I agree! Sometimes it’s the pile I own, sometimes what came cheap on the kindle app, sometimes the library calls to say “the book you requested is in”, and sometimes – the best times – a student will say “you’ve got to read this!”

  13. Mindy Higgins (@MMEPrincipal) January 14, 2013 at 6:32 am #

    Every Day by David Levithan

    • Beth January 14, 2013 at 3:07 pm #

I just picked this up from the library, but I have a few others to read before I get to it. Looks good, though.

  14. Maria Selke (@mselke01) January 14, 2013 at 6:38 am #

I tend to read multiple books at the same time – fluctuating between titles based on my mood. So my “on deck” books include the books I’ve just started like Fellowship for Alien Detection and Maniac Magee – with Rifles for Watie, One Dead Spy, Curses: Foiled Again and Navigating Early awaiting my attention.

  15. Becky Wilson January 14, 2013 at 6:53 am #

In my TBR pile right now I have Crow by Barbara Wright and The Mighty Mars Rovers. I am trying to finish the Nerdies short lists for middle grade fiction and middle/ya nonfiction. I read a lot of nonfiction this weekend, so I am leaning towards Crow at the moment, but I also want to hear about what my students have been reading – sometimes there is something new that I haven’t read that is suddenly “hot.”

  16. Debra Rosenquist January 14, 2013 at 6:55 am #

Well, I should finish some books that have been sitting on my Kindle for quite awhile, but I have lost interest. So, the next adult book will be The Garden of Beasts by Eric Larson. Children’s books that are currently in my library book and up next are Sadie and Ratz by Sonya Hartnett and Captain Awesome to the Rescue by Stan Kirby.

    • Jane Kise (@JaneKise) January 14, 2013 at 10:02 pm #

Garden of Beasts was one of the most sobering books I’ve ever read as I pondered how I might have reacted in Berlin 1933

  17. Debbie Robl (@debrobl) January 14, 2013 at 6:55 am #

I am going to read Book 2 of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (The Hidden Gallery) since my class will be skyping with author Maryrose Wood next week. After that, it will be Navigating Early.

    • Natasha January 15, 2013 at 7:24 pm #

I love those books! I’m excited to hear about someone else reading them. Your class is so lucky that they get to skype with the author!

  18. Barb Keister January 14, 2013 at 7:07 am #

Actually two on deck for this week – Fault in our Stars and Waterless Mountain (Newbery Challenge)

    • Chris January 14, 2013 at 8:25 am #

Loved Fault in Our Stars. Make sure you have tissues on hand.

  19. authorcarriecox January 14, 2013 at 7:08 am #

Once I finish Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater (I’m with Tony Keefer on this one — I’m just finding it a bit difficult), I’ll be reading Goddess Interrupted by AimĂ©e Carter. I love me some re-told Greek mythology stories!

    • Katherine Sokolowski (@katsok) January 14, 2013 at 7:43 am #

I love that you read it, Brian. I adored it but understand why you guys might not.

    • Sarah @ YA Love January 14, 2013 at 12:36 pm #

Shiver took me some time to get into, but I ended up loving it. I’m happy I didn’t abandon it.

    • Sarah @ YA Love January 14, 2013 at 12:35 pm #

  29. Kelly D. Vorhis (@kelvorhis) January 14, 2013 at 8:25 am #

Currently reading The Odyssey for English Academic Team and Just One Day by Gayle Forman. I always have stacks of books everywhere, so I’m not sure what I’ll read next. I’m thinking I need to start another PD book, maybe Notice and Note or reread Reading Ladders.

  30. Chris January 14, 2013 at 8:26 am #

Code Name Verity is my next book. Trying to read all the Nerdy awards.

    • Teresa Wisner Garrett January 14, 2013 at 8:41 pm #

Read Code Name Verity over the holidays and was blown away. Beautiful writing and such a haunting story can’t stop thinking about it. Enjoy!

  31. Sarah @ YA Love January 14, 2013 at 8:44 am #

I liked Bigger than a Breadbox a little better than Breadcrumbs but they were both awesome.

    • elfphd January 18, 2013 at 2:40 pm #

    • Judi January 14, 2013 at 11:16 pm #

Rebel Heart, the second book, that’s next up for me, too! After a bit of a rocky start, I ended up really enjoying Blood Red Road and had to wait FOREVER to get my hands on the second book. The waiting list was huge, so I take this as a good sign.

    The List by Siobhan Vivian

  77. Lindsey C. January 14, 2013 at 11:03 pm #

The next book on my list is Wonderstruck! Heard great things about it and I can’t wait!

  79. Krista White January 15, 2013 at 10:11 am #

LIfe of Pi has been working it’s way too the top of my “to read next” pile. A student of mine loved it – and getting a GT kid to say that a book made them “think differently” is enough of a recommendation!

    • Danika Dinsmore January 16, 2013 at 4:44 pm #

loved this book. it kind of snuck up on me. and I thought the ending was perfect. I literally hugged the book when I finished.

What a great list of books. I’m reading Michael Chabon’s first book THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, but for my next YA book it will be the final book in Cinda Williams Chima’s Seven Realms Series THE CRIMSON CROWN and for middle grade: CHAINED by Lynne Kelly.

Finishing The Great Unexpected and then on to Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool.

For me I am also seeking time to read The Round House by Louise Erdrich. ( find it important to to keep an adult read going as well. Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver is behind that one.)

I will be reading A Smidgen of Sky by Dianna Marie Winget on my Nook. I have Mousenet waiting in hardcover and I will be listening to Winter of the World on my iPhone. I always have 2 or 3 books going at once. I love reading Juvenile and Young Adult fiction so I can recommend it to my nieces and nephews.

With my kiddos- A Tale Dark and Grimm (we’re getting ready to start our traditional tales/fairy tales unit and this one has been a HUGE hit with my classes for the last two years)
