One of the first habits I notice in developing Nerdy Book Club members in my classroom is the idea of having an “on deck” book – knowing what you plan on reading next. This isn’t the gajillion title To Be Read list that so many of us have – this is the deliberate choice of what comes next and is often at the ready for whenever we finish what we’re reading now!
So today’s poll question is:
What book do you plan to read NEXT?
Leave your answer in the comments below and check back to see what your fellow Nerdy friends have to say!

I plan to read Chickadee, by Louise Erdrich, next. The Birchbark House is one of my all time favorites and I’m looking forward to meeting Omakayas as an adult. I’ll also squeeze in Each Kindness, by Jacqueline Woodson, when it arrives in our library.
I’ll be reading The Fault in Our Stars by John Green after I finish Les Miserables.
TFIOS is sooo good! You are in for a terrific treat!
I so wish i could read this “new” again…touched me, changed me.
You and I could be reading buddies…great choices!
you’ll laugh. you’ll cry.
Make sure you have the tissues handy! You’ll definitely need them. And be prepared- those characters will stay with you LONG after you’re done reading.
On Deck for me are:
Navigating Early (thanks to Colby but I had a voracious reader/student ask for it so I passed it to her first)
Live By Night by Dennis Lehane (loved the way he fused history and fiction in The Given Day)
Kevin
LOVED Navigating Early! It’ll be a Newbery contender for sure!
Loving Richard Feynman by Penny Tangey.
My next up is The Running Dream by Wendelin Van Draanen.
A student of mine read it last year based upon recommendation from another student. She said it was the best book she read the whole year. Every time I try to check it out from the library, it’s gone. Must be fantastic read.
The Light Between Oceans and Navigating Early are on this week’s list. Here’s hoping I get to them because I have 90 fiction stories to give feedback to before Friday. Maybe by writing this here it will propel me to succeed!
Shadow Bringer by David Calcutt – heard it connected in a way to A Monster Calls. Eager to open it!
I just picked up Bomb: The Race to Build-and Steal-the World’s Most Dangerous Weapon. With an extra week or so (compared to other years) to read potential Newbery/Caldecott/Printz potential winners, I’m trying to get several of those in.
Me too! Bomb was fantastic!
I am reading Bomb now it is a great read! Normally not a nonfiction fan but this is converting me.
Reading One For The Murphys next. Pretty excited because I hear nothing but good things about it!
Love One for the Murphy’s – in fact, it is in my TBR pile again but it deserves a second read
Loved One for the Murphys! It is wonderful.
The Lions of Little Rock by Kristin Levine
I absolutely loved Lions of Little Rock!
Like Maria, I loved LIONS. I didn’t know anything about this part of the Little Rock story.
I loved Lions of Little Rock because as an Arkansas native you hear a lot about the year before but not much about the year after. Also knew the area where the story happened made it real.
I’m about ready to read that aloud to my class with LIttle Rock Girl 1957.
Capture the flag
I can’t seem to have just one book on deck. I have to look through my TBR pile and determine how I feel that day. Sometimes it depends on how I feel after tr last book finished and whether or not I have a book hangover.
Sherry – I agree! Sometimes it’s the pile I own, sometimes what came cheap on the kindle app, sometimes the library calls to say “the book you requested is in”, and sometimes – the best times – a student will say “you’ve got to read this!”
Every Day by David Levithan
I just picked this up from the library, but I have a few others to read before I get to it. Looks good, though.
I tend to read multiple books at the same time – fluctuating between titles based on my mood. So my “on deck” books include the books I’ve just started like Fellowship for Alien Detection and Maniac Magee – with Rifles for Watie, One Dead Spy, Curses: Foiled Again and Navigating Early awaiting my attention.
In my TBR pile right now I have Crow by Barbara Wright and The Mighty Mars Rovers. I am trying to finish the Nerdies short lists for middle grade fiction and middle/ya nonfiction. I read a lot of nonfiction this weekend, so I am leaning towards Crow at the moment, but I also want to hear about what my students have been reading – sometimes there is something new that I haven’t read that is suddenly “hot.”
Well, I should finish some books that have been sitting on my Kindle for quite awhile, but I have lost interest. So, the next adult book will be The Garden of Beasts by Eric Larson. Children’s books that are currently in my library book and up next are Sadie and Ratz by Sonya Hartnett and Captain Awesome to the Rescue by Stan Kirby.
Garden of Beasts was one of the most sobering books I’ve ever read as I pondered how I might have reacted in Berlin 1933
I am going to read Book 2 of The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place (The Hidden Gallery) since my class will be skyping with author Maryrose Wood next week. After that, it will be Navigating Early.
I love those books! I’m excited to hear about someone else reading them. Your class is so lucky that they get to skype with the author!
Actually two on deck for this week – Fault in our Stars and Waterless Mountain (Newbery Challenge)
Loved Fault in Our Stars. Make sure you have tissues on hand.
After all the feedback from my post on Saturday, I need to read Colin Fischer next.
Once I finish Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater (I’m with Tony Keefer on this one — I’m just finding it a bit difficult), I’ll be reading Goddess Interrupted by AimĂ©e Carter. I love me some re-told Greek mythology stories!
I love that you read it, Brian. I adored it but understand why you guys might not.
Shiver took me some time to get into, but I ended up loving it. I’m happy I didn’t abandon it.
Just started COLLATERAL, an adult novel in verse by Ellen Hopkins. Terrific so far!
My next book is The Miseducation of Cameron Post by Danforth. Reading a few more Printz contenders before the announcements!
I need to read this one as well. Have they announced the Printz short list?
Amelia Lost. I even use the term ON DECK, which I borrowed from @brentjpeterson. http://mretome.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/1-14-ring-the-bell-monday-its-monday-what-are-you-reading/. Check out his cool ON DECK logo: http://bjp7834.wordpress.com/2013/01/14/what-are-you-reading-monday-1-7-13-2/
On deck for me is All the Broken Pieces by Ann Burg.
I’m reading Catcher in the Rye this week as part of my book gap challenge.
Yay! Katerine, I love this book. I always recommend it to my most sarcastic readers.
Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage is next up—finally. Just finished Spy School by Stuart Gibbs, which is a fun read.
I’m reading The Mighty Miss Malone by C.P. Curtis. It’s the final book for our Mock Newbery Club.
For my class I am going to read The False Prince and then All for the Murphys thanks to you all. For myself I am now reading Across the Universe and my book on deck is Anna and the French Kiss.
Currently reading The Odyssey for English Academic Team and Just One Day by Gayle Forman. I always have stacks of books everywhere, so I’m not sure what I’ll read next. I’m thinking I need to start another PD book, maybe Notice and Note or reread Reading Ladders.
Code Name Verity is my next book. Trying to read all the Nerdy awards.
Read Code Name Verity over the holidays and was blown away. Beautiful writing and such a haunting story can’t stop thinking about it. Enjoy!
I’m trying to catch up on back list titles, so I think I’ll read Going Underground by Susan Vaught next. I really want to read Just One Day by Gayle Forman as well though…
My kid “on deck” book is Mal and Chad Belly Flop and my adult one is Extra Lives – the Level Up book club book.
Just finished Navigating Early last week. Can’t say enough – I just loved it!
Top of my TBR pile” SLOB, DAUGHTER OF SMOKE & BONE, ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, and THE DIVINERS. Still reading a little YA heavy but shifting back to middle grade slowly as I work on revisions!
I just finished Smoke and Bone and loved it. Enjoy!
Looking forward to opening Bird by Bird: Some instructions on Writing and Life, by Anne Lamott. Then Capture the Flag (FINALLY it’s my turn!!) by Kate Messner. They are both burning holes in my book bag.
I will be reading Tale of Despereaux for the Newbery Challenge.
I <3 this book!!!
Just got The Tenth of December, a book of stories by George Saunders the NYT Book Review says is the BEST Book of the Year. Much praise! BUT. I’m supposed to be reading nonfiction, according to my #bookgap promise. Ooops.
Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson and Luna by Julie Anne Peters
I don’t know in what order I’ll be reading them, but the next books on my pile are The Runaway King, Hokey Pokey, and a reread of How They Croaked for my Guys Read club.
The Storytelling Animal: How Stories Make us Human. My TBR shelves face my desk, motivating me to work faster so I can get to reading.
Following up from Saturday’s Nerdy post, I’ve bumped Colin Fisher up the list. Then for book group: Three Times Lucky by Sheila Turnage and Unfortunate Son by Constance Leeds.
Just finished the Fitzosbornes in Exile. Will read The Fitzosbornes at War next.
I’m one of the last to read Wonder…it’s coming to my mailbox this week right after I finish Insurgent.
The Weird Sisters
Once I finish the False Prince I plan to read Endangered.
My adult read is Night Circus and my next middle grade read is Neversink. It’s been on my Kindle for awhile now.
I’m reading TEMPLE GRANDIN HOW THE GIRL WHO LOVED COWS EMBRACED AUTISM AND CHANGED THE WORLD by Sy Montgomery. I’m listening to CALICO JOE by Grisham and have SLY FOX by Pirro on my nightstand – don’t bother with that one!
I have 2 of Grandin’s books on hold right now…looking forward to their arrival.
I’m almost finished with Seraphina. Then it’s on to The Diviners by Libba Bray.
Next up for me is SON by Lois Lowry. That is, as soon as I finish BROTHERS (about RFK’s search for his brother’s assassins). I guess I’m in a dark, family place!
I’ve got some Graphic Novels that just came in today. Drama, Chickenhare and Cardboard. Next fictional novel up is Legend by Marie Lu. Next non-fiction piece is The World Until Yesterday by Jared Diamond.
Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool just arrived at the library for me…so it is jumping up to my next book!
Stiefvater’s Raven Boys and an afternoon of picture books at the local library are on deck for me!
Love love love Raven Boys!
Loved Raven Boys! I wish that it could have continued…the ending left me ready to pick up the sequel.
Either Breadcrumbs or Bigger Than a Breadbox. Something with Bread in the title for sure. Not sure which one to hit first. Suggestions?
I vote Breadcrumbs, but they’re both good. Enjoy!
I liked Bigger than a Breadbox a little better than Breadcrumbs but they were both awesome.
They are both amazing reads. My vote would be for bread box.
Next up for me is Shadow of the Wind by Ruiz Zafon. But I won’t start it until Thursdays, since my current book has a few hundred pages to go.
I’m finishing Rebecca Stead’s Liar & Spy right now. Then I’ll dive into Cardboard and Bad Island by Doug TenNapel. Graphic novels are such a huge hit in my library!
I just finished Code Name Verity and on deck is The Diviners by Libba Gray and Moonbird by Philip Hoose.
All the Wrong Questions by Lemony Snickett and Starring Jules (as herself!)
Girl of Nightmares by Kendare Blake!
Can’t pick just one, but on top of the list right now: Splendors and Glooms, One for the Murphys and Code Name Verity.
Almost finished Inkheart. Next is Teach Like a Pirate.
I am anxiously waiting for Splintered by A.G. Howard to get in at the public library!
As soon as I finish Wonder, I have Starry River of the Sky on deck.
I just finished Gayle Forman’s Just One Day, and while I’m tempted to read it again, I am moving on to City of Bones by Cassandra Clare. I’m a big fan of the Infernal Devices trilogy (highly anticipating Clockwork Princess on March 19) but have not read the Mortal Instruments series yet!
You are in for a fabulous treat! Make sure you have the rest of the series close by. You won’t want to stop once you start.
Feynman by Jim Ottaviani – trying to read some graphic novels!
I am going to read Awaken and The List.
Kids of Kabul, by Deborah Ellis
I have Navigating Eaerly next on my list. Once that is done, I will be reading Sophia’s War by AVI.
Just finished The Fault in Our Stars- had to take about a day’s break from reading after that one. Next up is Our Only May Amelia, but also need to read Diary of a Wimpy Kid and Percy Jackson and the LIghtning Thief- they are both part of my book gap challenge in honor of my students.
Allison, I also recently finished The Fault in Our Stars and I hear you on the needing to take a “break from reading” after that one. What a great story!
I’m listening to The Lightning Thief during my commute, and my seven year old is devouring it at home, so I have to keep moving discs around. Great story!
I am finally getting to read See You at Harrys. I can’t wait.
I just started an ARC of The Runaway King. After that I’m either going to read Walk Two Moons or Navigating Early. I was looking through the list on here and LOVED One For The Murphys, Every Day, The Fault in Our Stars and The Lions of Little Rock to name a few….Happy Reading everybody!
I love One for the Murphys, too! I think the Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is a great follow up for an older high school reader.
I have a couple I’d like to read this week. First, is Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson because I checked it out of the library and I have a deadline. Second, is Liar & Spy by Rebecca Stead and third, Navigating Early.
I will be spending my time the next few weeks reading Newbery Medal winning books from the 80s.
I am finishing up Incarnate right now. Then I’ll be reading See You at Harry’s so I can hand it off to a student.
I loved See You at Harry’s! It made me cry but it was a wonderful book.
Next up for me is Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers. I have heard nothing but good things about it!
Chickadee
Starry River of the Sky
The Cloak Society
A student is bringing the second book of Blood Red Road. I lent her that one and now she is lending me her book. Love the dialogue we had about these books. I did enjoy the first one.
Rebel Heart, the second book, that’s next up for me, too! After a bit of a rocky start, I ended up really enjoying Blood Red Road and had to wait FOREVER to get my hands on the second book. The waiting list was huge, so I take this as a good sign.
The List by Siobhan Vivian
The Mysterious Benedict Society! I’ve been meaning to read this for the past year and a half and a student loaned it to me! I’ve got to read it next!
The next book on my list is Wonderstruck! Heard great things about it and I can’t wait!
LIfe of Pi has been working it’s way too the top of my “to read next” pile. A student of mine loved it – and getting a GT kid to say that a book made them “think differently” is enough of a recommendation!
loved this book. it kind of snuck up on me. and I thought the ending was perfect. I literally hugged the book when I finished.
Once I finish my review of Navigating Early, next up are Cinder, Stolen Nights by Rebecca Maizel (out 2/29), and The House on Mango Street.
Karen Blumenthal’s Steve Jobs: The Man Who Thought Different
Anthologies of Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett.
I read A Wrinkle in Time over the Winter Break, so on deck I have A Wind in the Door.
What a great list of books. I’m reading Michael Chabon’s first book THE MYSTERIES OF PITTSBURGH, but for my next YA book it will be the final book in Cinda Williams Chima’s Seven Realms Series THE CRIMSON CROWN and for middle grade: CHAINED by Lynne Kelly.
Dead End in Norvelt by Jack Gantos
Extreme Baby Mouse is next for me.
Finishing The Great Unexpected and then on to Navigating Early by Clare Vanderpool.
For me I am also seeking time to read The Round House by Louise Erdrich. ( find it important to to keep an adult read going as well. Flight Behavior by Barbara Kingsolver is behind that one.)
I have Navigating Early on the Nook and plan to read it soon!
I will be reading A Smidgen of Sky by Dianna Marie Winget on my Nook. I have Mousenet waiting in hardcover and I will be listening to Winter of the World on my iPhone. I always have 2 or 3 books going at once. I love reading Juvenile and Young Adult fiction so I can recommend it to my nieces and nephews.
Personally- Beautiful Creatures (I usually try to read books before the movies come out)
With my kiddos- A Tale Dark and Grimm (we’re getting ready to start our traditional tales/fairy tales unit and this one has been a HUGE hit with my classes for the last two years)
Finishing up When You Reach Me, on deck, Liar and Spy, both by Rebecca Stead.
On deck is The Great Night and Tell The Wolves I’m Home for book club.
