The Dream Thieves by Maggie Stiefvater – Review by Mindi Rench

Summary from publisher:

If you could steal things from dreams, what would you take?

Ronan Lynch has secrets.  Some he keeps from others.  Some he keeps from himself.

One secret:  Ronan can bring things out of his dreams.

And sometimes he’s not the only one who wants those things.

Ronan is one of the raven boys — a group of friends, practically brothers, searching for a dead king named Glendower, who they think is hidden somewhere in the hills by their elite private school, Aglionby Academy.  The path to Glendower has long lived as an undercurrent beneath town.  But now, like Ronan’s secrets, it is beginning to rise to the surface — changing everything in its wake.

Last fall, I wrote a very fangirly Nerdy Book Club Review of The Raven Boys, the first book in this series.  Now that I’ve had the opportunity to read The Dream Thieves, I’m loving this series even more.  In this second book, Stiefvater focuses the storyline on Ronan, the character I least liked when I read Raven Boys.  Ronan was off-putting to me; there was just something I didn’t like about him; perhaps something I didn’t trust.  As I started reading Dream Thieves, I realized I was GLAD Ronan was the main character here.  I was learning so much about him – most importantly WHY he acted the way he did. It all boils down to two words:  secrets and dreams.  Ronan’s dreams are not like yours or mine.  His are powerful and full of magic.  His secrets could destroy not only Ronan but also those he loves.

This book is more complex; there’s much more going on here, and I really had to concentrate to pick up on the multiple story lines  – Ronan and Kavinsky in Henrietta, Gansey and Adam at Gansey’s home, Noah fading in and out, and the mystery of the Gray Man – and watch how all of them come slowly together as the book moves toward its breathtaking climax.

Though Stiefvater answers many of the questions I had at the end of Raven Boys, I was left with many new ones.  Will they ever find what they’re looking for?  Will Blue end up with a Raven Boy?  If so, which one? When will Book 3 come out? Whenever it is, I’ll be haunting my local Indie bookstore, anxiously awaiting its release!

Will I see you there?
