Reasons You Should Attend the #NCTE13 #NerdUp
In less than three weeks, thousands of English teachers and authors will arrive in Boston for the annual convention of the National Council for Teachers of English. Among that number will be the large tribe that has come to identify themselves as Nerdy Book Club members.
This presents an opportunity too hugely awesome to pass up: the chance for Nerdy Book Club members to meet face to face.
Last year we hosted a party for those who posted, but planning for such an event this year seemed too limiting.
The result? We’ll be holding an informal meet-up (a #NerdUp!) on Friday night at the Sidebar and Grill at the Sheraton Boston from 8-12 and we’d love for you to join us!
We could think of a thousand reasons why you would join us, but we thought it would be more fun to see the reasons you might have to offer. Leave them in the comments below.
I think you should go to the #NerdUp because you will get a chance to hang out with Brian Wyzlic. He’s one of the nicest dudes you will ever meet.
I want to go to #NerdUp b/c I hear that my home state of Michigan is well-represented in al things Nerdy! Sounds exciting!
Oh, how fun!! I think you should go to the #NerdUp because Nerdy Book Club people are the nicest, smartest, funniest, nerdiest group of people you’ll ever meet!
One good reason to do this is to see just how many nerds can fit in one place.
Thanks for setting this up. I’ll be there, nerdily.
Go because Nerdy Book Club members are not only brilliant readers and writers, but they are also the BEST PARTIERS! 🙂
Another reason is to see how much money you can spend thru one-click purchases on Amazon in the time it takes to have one drink. The book talking will be THAT FAST!
So much truth in this statement!
I just want to say “thank you” (in person) for all you do to share the love of books and reading and thoughtful posts with everyone. Sadly I am not “on Twitter” so I miss a lot, but I keep track here and on FB. As a retired teacher who was a workshop teacher from the early 80s ie the beginning, thanks Don Graves and Nancie Atwell (even before Nancie Atwell, I had something similar going on) I so wish I had had this community back in the day. I love learning about books and ideas from all of you.
Thanks for trail blazing the workshop path for us, Janet! I was in school in the 80s and wish I had had teachers like you. Glad to see you are still reading and learning in retirement – awesome!
Hey Katherine,
I am Janet Clare on FB, just fyi. Too hard to explain my early social media nervousness on here…but…..I am working to become a literacy consultant for using poetry in the classroom as a hook for literacy and for the joy of it as well. So looking forward to meeting you “in person”!
J.
I think you should go because this many folks from Nerdy Book Club all contained in one place will make your weekend start out right AND you will surely leave with many great book recommendations!
What day? I want to go!
pm or am?
Friday evening.
I really wish I could be there. Heavy Sigh. Fingers crossed for next year!
Another reason is that NBC enthusiasm is contagious and you’ll leave feeling better about books, reading, teaching, and life!
You should go because I can’t, and why should we both miss out on nerd heaven?
You should go because #nerdybookclub is awesome so #nerdybookclubpartytime is even more awesome!
I hope that those who are there will write a blog posting or two about the conference, it would be great to live it vicariously through those who were able to attend!
I am usually a wallflower at parties. Unless I know everyone in the room, I am very much the uncomfortable introvert who would rather be at home in my PJs reading a book with a dog on my lap. BUT when I’m at a Nerdy gathering, the wallflower in me goes away and I can join any conversation because most likely it will be about books. Nerdy parties are the only parties I want to attend!
I still get a bit overwhelmed with the crowd but I can usually find a few smaller groups to hang with. Can’t wait to see everyone.
The possibilities here for a Word Up parody are too good to resist… (please don’t let me hang alone here as the only person that knows this song!):
“Yo, Nerdy Readers around the world
Got so many books to share with you, so tell all the boys and girls
Tell your brother, your sister and your mamma too
‘Cause they’re about to throw down and you’ll know just what to do
Wave your books in the air like you don’t care
Glide by the people as they start to look and stare
Read your book, Read your book, Read your book quick mamma
Come on Nerdy Reader, tell me what’s the word”
So yeah, I guess this is me saying — Can’t wait!!
I wave my books in the air like I just don’t care on a daily basis, Kelly. Love this parody!
To meet face to face with new/old friends! So sorry I won’t be there! Enjoy, have a drink and read a book for me!
How exciting! You have to go to #NerdUp because you’ll meet people as nerdy as yourself! I can’t wait to meet you all in Boston!!
Best reason is to meet in person all the incredible people who are part of the Nerdy Book Club.
You should go because I have nightmares about being the only one who shows up. Seriously, it’s Nerdvana. You will never meet a greater group of book-obsessed, enthusiastic, fun people.
You should totally go to brush up on all the great nerdy tshirts out there! Planning my wardrobe already!
I want to go to the #NerdUp to say thank you to so many folks who have introduced me to some of my favorite books! Hoping I get to meet many fellow nerds at NCTE!
I am so looking forward to my first trip to #NCTE and #NerdUp so I can finally meet some of my nerdy friends in person!
I want to go to #NerdUp because I haven’t seen Brian Wyzlic in a LONG TIME and we miss him in Ann Arbor for his teaching skills and his DRUMMING skills!
I think you should go because meeting the people who foster an undeniable love for all things book would be quite an honor!
So looking forward to meeting all of you!
Sounds awesome!
Can’t wait to see everyone at NerdUp!
I am so excited to see everyone! (I also heard that some people may have access to some horrible beer made from a beard, in which case I will be the person running to the opposite side of the room – eh-hem, Brian, eh-hem, Tony)
Ha! I’ll be right behind you!
I am so behind on reading Nerdy posts but so glad I saw this one before leaving for Boston. Excited to nerd out with everyone. #NerdUp!
#nerdup – cant wait to meet everyone I’ve followed and begun to know on twitter!
I am planning on going just be with people who spend as much, if not more, money on books as I do! 🙂 #nerdup
Pingback: Where to Find Me at NCTE
I’m nerding out realizing that this week is #nerdup week, and I will get to meet people IRL that I have only “met” virtually. I can’t wait!
I think you ought to be at #Nerdup because nerds are even better and nerdier in person. Plus, what’s better than seeing the creators, editors and champions of books all in one place while you’re ordering a locally-brewed beer?
I’m meeting up with some poetry friends for dinner there, so I can’t wait to say hi to all you Nerdy Book Club people!
