POLL: What 2014 Books Are You Most Looking Forward to Reading?
One of the things I most look forward to in December and January is the chance to reflect on the titles released in the preceding year. There are awards lists and blog posts and the chance to skim through the highlights of my reading year in Goodreads that leave me nodding your head as I recall the stories that have moved me.
I know I’m not alone.
While I was at ALA Mid-Winter this past weekend, I was able to see and hear about what’s coming in 2014 and I felt my focus start to shift from what I have read (and still want to read) from 2013 to what’s coming next.
So we’re curious here at Nerdy what 2014 titles are on your reading radar.
Leave your answer in the comments and then browse to see what others have posted.
I can’t wait to read (in no particular order):
Seven Stories Up by Laurel Snyder
The Spy Catchers of Maple Hill by Megan Frazer Blakemore
The Change Your Name Store by Leanne Shirtliffe, illus. by Tina Kugler
How to Outrun a Crocodile When Your Shoes are Untied by Jess Keating
The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier
We Were Liars by E. Lockhart
President Taft is Stuck in the Bath by Mac Barnette, illus by Chris Van Dusen
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier
The new picture book by Bob Shea and illus by Lane Smith that’s coming out in the fall
That’s all I can think of right now. I’m sure I’ll add more as the day goes on (especially as I read all of your lists!).
Also I know I spelled Mac Barnett’s name wrong. It’s early. I promise I won’t do it again (spell his name wrong, I mean — I will absolutely post comments on Nerdy Book Club at the crack of morning).
Ha! I love that you and others leave comments so early in the morning. Typos are bound to happen, but the enthusiasm more than makes up for those. 🙂
Only Nerdies would be able to see book enthusiasm in my book list (because it is, of course there! SO MUCH enthusiasm for these books!).
El Deafo/Cece Bell
I’m definitely excited about a few of the same ones on Julie’s list.
And I am over the moon excited for El Deafo a GN by CeCe Bell due out in September!
Jennifer Holm’s The Fourteenth Goldfish should be added to everyone’s to-read list.
I keep finding books that go on my “must read” list! In no particular order:
The Ghosts of Tupelo Landing by Sheila Turnage
Five, Six, Seven, Nate! By Tim Federle
A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd
Jinx’s Magic by Sage Blackwood
Comics Squad: Recess by Jennifer Holm and a whole bunch of other wonderful author/illustrators
Cress by Marissa Meyer
The Return of Zita the Spacegirl by Ben Hatke
Marty McGuire Has Too Many Pets by Kate Messner
Seven Stories Up by Laurel Snyder
The Shadow Throne by Jennifer A. Nielsen
Nightingale’s Nest by Nikki Loftin
The Hero’s Guide to Being an Outlaw by Christopher Healy
Sisters by Raina Telgemeier (stolen off Julie’s list above. I knew it was in the works, but didn’t realize that the plan is for 2014. Can I just squee?!)
And the list keeps growing… I made a decision this year to read some of the books in my classroom library that I haven’t read yet, but then I keep finding out about new titles that are coming out. I don’t think my TBR pile is shrinking any time soon!
I love reading everyone’s lists! This will be a fun comments section to keep checking! Mine are similar to the above:
The Shadow Throne by Jennifer Nielsen (If I can ever get the ARC back from my students!)

A Snicker of Magic by Natalie Lloyd
The Port Chicago 50: Disaster, Mutiny, and the Fight for Civil Rights by Steve Sheinkin

The Grasshopper Jungle by Andrew Smith– I want a copy so bad I can taste it!

I just read the 2012 Origin Jessica Khoury’s first novel at my 7th grade daughter’s urging. You are introduced to the scientific community of Corpus that has a secret unit in the Amazon Rainforest that is tampering with genetics and draws on the ideals of Nazi Germany’s perfect race. We are now launching into Khoury’s just released new companion novel Vitro that follows Corpus to a remote island in the Pacific for more biological intrigue.

Bugged: How Insects Changed History by Sarah Albee
Stone Giant: Michelangelo’s David and How He Came to Be written by Jane Sutcliffe and illustrated by John Shelley
Oh, and can I list MOVIE versions of great books due out in the summer of 2014?
If so, then I can’t wait to watch The Fault in Our Stars, The Giver, and If I Stay.
Looking at what’s playing in the theaters this year will be like browsing the bookshelves. I’m relieved about TFioS after seeing the trailer this week – but I must say that Hollywood has a lot to live up to with recreating so many beloved books for the Big Screen. We readers are a tough audience when it comes to translating our books into film.
The White House is Burning by Jane Sutcliff
A book I’ve read that I think people will be talking about is the very poignant THE SECRET HUM OF A DAISY by Tracy Holczer, out in April or May. Richard Peck gushed about it, and it’s just a beautiful, beautiful book.
Looking forward to so many releases this year — too many to list them all!
I’m really looking forward to reading Deborah Wiles REVOLUTION and Kate Messner’s Manhunt.
I’m looking forward to Panic by Lauren Oliver.
Oh my goodness, oh my goodness! I’m still trying to catch up with 2013 releases and now I’ve got tons of other great titles to add to the list. Not a bad problem to have, of course. And thanks for this post and to everyone who shared…as a writer, I sometimes go into the black hole of craft and lose touch with what’s new and exciting in reading, versus writing. Maybe there’ll be a #nerdlution Round Three and I can add “Read One 2014 Release a Week”. 🙂 Happy reading, everyone!
I’m looking through the list here and realizing that so many titles are already shared. I am thrilled that 2014 includes new releases from some of my all-time favorite authors. We already can find Laurie Halse Anderson’s Impossible Knife of Memory is already out. Andrew Smith’s Grasshopper Jungle comes out soon. The next book in the Diviners series (Lair of Dreams) comes out in August and the still untitled book 3 in The Raven Boys series is supposed to come out…eventually. A.S. King has Glory O’Brien’s History of the Future comes out this year and there is a new Jennifer Holm book to look forward to! The Night Gardener by Jonathan Auxier is at the top of my reading pile at the moment and The Summer of Letting Go by Gae Polisner is still open on my ereader. I read We Were Liars by E. Lockhart already and am looking forward to its release so that I can push it into the hands of everyone I know so I have more people to talk to about it when they’re done. (Don’t read reviews on it – just read it. PLEASE.) There’s a new Origami Yoda book to look forward to (and my son tells me that the teaser chapters he got last weekend at ALAMW just confirm that it will ROCK). There’s also She Is Not Invisible by Marcus Sedgwick and Love Letters to the Dead by Ava Dellaria and Sisters by Raina Telgemeier and Quest and Seven Stories Up and This Star Won’t Go Out and…
The good news is that there are a zillion more good ones that I didn’t list here because it would take FOREVER. Then there are the ones I don’t know anything about yet. I’m looking forward to whatever this reading year brings!
I’m emotionally invested in the world of Percy Jackson, so I am looking forward to The Blood of Olympus coming out. Plus, Gail Carriger is expected to release the third book in her Finishing School series (Waistcoats & Weaponry) and that has me really excited.
Cress- Lunar Chronicles, 14th Goldfish, Wildwood #3, Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy, Sisters…
Now ask, how many of you have read books that you have to keep quiet, bite your tongue, and hold back reviews on for the next 1-4 months?! That’s what’s hard for me… although having prewritten blog posts is quite a lovely treat when I finally can share my thoughts…
Ashes by Laurie Halse Anderson. Follow up to Chains and Forge. Release date by March 1.
My kids can’t wait for Sisters!
Oh wow! How did I miss that this is a two-LHA-book-year?! Excellent!!!
The Shadow Throne (Feb), the second Arnie the Doughnut chapter book (Feb), Princess Labelmaker (March), Menagerie #2 Dragon on Trial (March), Ever After High 2 Unfairest of them All (March), Wings of Fire #5 Brightest Night (March), The Ninja Librarians (April), The Bravest Princess (April), Happy Birthday Babymouse (April), Hero’s Guide to Being an Outlaw (April), Whatever After 5 Bad Hair Day (April), , Who Is George Lucas?
