The Top Ten Favorite Picture Books So Far in Mrs. Sokolowski’s class

In our fifth grade classroom picture books are revered for the amazing art form they are. Today I asked my students a question:

If you had to pick one picture book that every classroom should own, what would it be?

When I limited the number to ten, groans were heard across the room. Comments ranged from, “There are too many good books!” to “I cannot possibly pick one.” Eventually, they starting shopping the shelves. Titles were shouted. Favorite characters were championed. In a matter of ten minutes, groups had formed and selections were being summarized. Now, all that is left is for me to get out of the way and share the words from my students below. They had a grand total of twenty minutes to select, type, and share. This is what they came up with.

Journey by Aaron Becker is the perfect book for your classroom because it has fantastic illustrations and has great imagination. It’s about a girl with a red crayon and with that crayon she can draw anything. She goes to a secret world with the crayon. She meets something that creates friendship. This story even inspired us to use part of this book in our own story. This is why you should purchase this book!

We think Carnivores written by Aaron Reynolds, illustrated by Dan Santat, should be in the top ten because it’s funny. A way that it’s funny is because in the beginning the lion tries to resist eating the other animals, but can’t. Another thing is when they eat the owl at the end.  Another thing is when the lion and the wolf are going to turn the shark into sushi.  Another is when the wolf dressed up as a bunny and his mouth is watering.  Finally whenever the shark is dressed as an octopus. It is hilarious.

Fossil by Bill Thomson is a book that reels you in. In the story there is a boy with his beagle that they go to a beach. He found some rocks and broke it in half. When he broke it in half there were fossils. One of the fossils was a dragonfly. This wordless picture book is breathtaking.

I like Open This Little Book written by Jesse Klausmeier, illustrated by Suzy Lee, because you open the big book and then, surprise!  There is a smaller book inside. The book keeps getting smaller and smaller and smaller. It’s a fun book and it’s crazy imaginative. It’s very creative and fun. We love love love this book.

I love The Invisible Boy written by Trudy Ludwig, illustrated by Patrice Barton, because it shows how life is for some kids in the world. It shows how they get bullied and how kids need to stand up and not stand by. It also shows how one drop of kindness can make someone’s day. It reminds us that we shouldn’t forget that just smiling at someone could give them some color. The Invisible Boy is a great book that people all over should have a chance to read.

The Story of Fish and Snail is a beautifully illustrated book by Deborah Freedman.  The color was beautiful, especially the water.  The character Snail is a role model to look up to.  He was nervous about leaving his book, and nervous to follow fish.  Fish is very adventurous and tries to get fish to leave his book.  This is an inspiring book and I think everyone should get the chance to read it.

We think Watermelon Seed by Greg Pizzoli should be in every classroom because it is so good! It is also very funny because the alligator eats the seed. Then he thinks it will grow in his belly. After that he burps and the seed falls out. He was so happy that he got the seed out too. That’s why I think it should be in classrooms.

I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen is a very funny read.  The use of color in the text is cool, it goes with the animals perfectly.  The illustrations are hilarious and the repetitive lines make it even better.  I think everyone should get the experience of reading this book.

Mr. Wuffles is an awesome book by David Wiesner because it’s funny, and the aliens talk like in different shapes and you have to try and figure out what they’re saying. I like this book because it’s a cool idea, the drawings are really good, and it is so SO funny! I think that everybody should read this book.

Mr. Tiger Goes Wild is a funny and great book. This book is great because it has an amazing message, be yourself.  Mr. Tiger Goes Wild is my favorite picture book because it’s so funny when he bathes in the fountain. Also, when Mr. Tiger roars in public and everyone stares at him. This book is awesome. It’s super funny and it is the best picture book I’ve ever read. Mr. Tiger Goes Wild is a really good book and I think that everyone should read Mr. Tiger Goes Wild by Peter Brown.
