Book Trailer Premiere: Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla
I read Katherine Applegate’s The One and Only Ivan on January 4, 2012. I can still see the tears that soaked the pages of my advanced reader’s copy. I can still hear the reverberating refrain that ran through my head on that cold winter’s day: “I must get this book into as many hands as possible. I must get this book into as many hands as possible. I must get this book into as many hands as possible” Nine hundred twenty-three days later, those words are still bouncing around inside my head. It is safe to say I have become a relentless and self-proclaimed ambassador for Katherine’s masterpiece.
If you read my blog, follow me on Twitter, or have ever visited my school library, you have heard me talk at length about the time I spent an hour with the real Ivan and his caretaker, Jodi. From where I’m sitting right now, I can see the copy of The One and Only Ivan that Ivan autographed.
Ivan’s story and Katherine’s capacious (thank you, Kate DiCamillo) heart have impacted my life unlike any reading experience before or since the publication of The One and Only Ivan. I always carry a copy in my car because you never know when someone might need one. You never know when Ivan’s next reader might enter your life. It is a forever book. One I will forever recommend; one I will forever hold in a special place inside my heart.
For all of these reasons and many more, I am honored to share with you the book trailer for Ivan: The Remarkable True Story of the Shopping Mall Gorilla. I stood next to Anne Hoppe, Katherine’s amazing editor, while reading it during the ALA Midwinter meeting. Tears streamed down my face. I could not find the right words to express how deeply it touched me. All I could do was hug Anne. All I can do right now, dear reader, is encourage you to put Ivan’s nonfiction book into your students’ hands on October 7, 2014. Ivan’s story will live on because of Katherine and you. Happy watching!

Thanks for the heads up! I read Ivan to my class last term and they loved it. I can’t wait to share the trailer with them.
This was worth the suspense! I’m so glad there’s going to be more Ivan in the world. Beautiful trailer, and so nice to read your thoughts, John. 🙂

Beautiful trailer and I just ordered my copy of the book. I cannot wait to pair it with The One and Only Ivan. The Nerdy Book Club was the perfect place to premier the book trailer — I’m so glad you got the opportunity to do so.

Even though it’s midsummer here, I had to forward this to former students to enjoy. Thank you.
Goodness, I knew you loved the book, but now know how touched you were by it. Thank you for sharing your story so that others may be touched by it as well. Beautiful trailer, I can’t wait to share this new book with my students.
Can’t wait to read this book. Mr. Schu-I thought I loved you from afar but your passion evidenced in this post confirms it! Anyone who is compelled to carry a copy of Ivan around with them ‘just in case’ is a friend of mine!
Thank you! 🙂
John, I am totally convinced that your passion for books and sharing them actually flows through your veins and your capacious heart 😀
Beautiful. Your post. Ivan. The novel. This new picture book. All should be shared widely. I am purchasing this book in October and inviting my class from last year back to read it with me because we all fell in love with Ivan and can never, ever get enough of that feeling that Katherine’s beautiful novel made us feel. Pure magic. More than human. Better.
Im so excited for this! Thank you for sharing!
This is awesome John. Shared it with everyone I know!

Not good. I want to remedy this right away. I Love Ivan and wanted to let you know how much. I Loved this post. “It sent shivers down my back!”
Thanks so very much! 🙂
I shared this post with my third graders today and showed them the book trailer for the new book. They were so excited when I told them that I had a copy reserved at the bookstore that I am picking up after school today. Thanks for sharing your love of Ivan’s stories with the world!
