George’s Secret Key To The Universe by Lucy and Stephen Hawking – Retro Review by Mahriya
If you love Doctor Who, then you’ll definitely love this book. This book is all about space and the universe. It starts off as a pretty normal book but soon turns into a place of mystery, danger and a whole new world. I simply picked this book from a random shelf in the library and sat down to enjoy it.
George’s journey to the universe begins in his neighbour’s house where he meets Eric and Annie. Soon he knows all about the computer, Cosmos, which creates a portal to space. However, soon things get out of hand when he says something about Cosmos in front of his teacher Greeper. Greeper gets very suspicious of George and his Cosmos story. So Greeper hatches a plan. I’m going to let you read the book to find out what happens with the plan and the bullies – Ringo and his friends.
And things go from bad to worse when Eric’s daughter Annie takes George on a trip into outer space without her dad’s permission. From then on Annie and George weren’t allowed to talk to each other.
But George’s parents have no idea about their son’s amazing adventures IN SPACE. They live quite happily in their nice and tidy garden with no technology in their house. Not even a telephone could be found in his home. His parents believed that devices like this were not good. (Also, they never let George have any flavoured juice such as Ribena.) As you can, imagine this was very annoying for a boy who likes adventure. But the one thing George wanted so much was a computer. He had bugged his parents but he knew the answer. He had even tried explaining the benefits of the computer but still they refused.
A school competition about space interests George and he signs up. At first he was going to do his presentation about a piece of rock he got from a trip to outer space but that soon changes. Relying on Eric for some help, George soon gets left behind with a mission to save Eric and many other friends. But with so little time left, he has to be quick and that’s not easy when you have to get someone out of a black hole, find a computer and save the planet. George and Annie become friends once again and go on mission impossible.
Cosmos is missing and he still has to give a presentation. Working around the clock, George…
And that’s what I’m going to leave you with. What happens to George, his parents, his pig, Annie, Eric, Graham, Cosmos, Ringo and the bullies? Read the book to find out what happens next.
I loved this book. The photos of space were amazing and exciting and it was written beautifully. I really recommend this book and the rest of the series which I hope you will enjoy.
